Key concept 2
Relevant prior knowledge facilitates encoding and retrieval processes |
Implications:
According to the Information Processing Model, having well established, organized knowledge prior to learning a new piece of information, will facilitate its incorporation and retrieval. Instruction should be developed in a way that helps students use or recall their prior knowledge (Schraw, G. & McCrudden, M., 2013). This enables a better organizing of concepts and makes the information meaningful to the learner. Strategies: Below you will find some of the most common tricks used and taught to increase elaboration (i.e. the transfer of knowledge from STM to LTM). "My Platypus Ran In Idaho"
