Information Processing states that "elaboration is the key to developing a knowledge base" (Huitt, 2000). Progressing through Bloom's taxonomy allows the student to engage numerous times with the material in various ways, thus increasing elaboration and making the knowledge more meaningful. The more ways you can encode knowledge the more ways you will be able to recall the information at a later time.

When viewed in such a way, there might not seem to be many resemblances between the theory of Information Processing and the philosophy of constructivism. Due to the computer analogy, Information Processing is often quickly dismissed as being irrelevant to the ideas proposed in constructivist teaching. The next section wishes to dispel this notion and expose how the roots of the Information Processing Model incorporate some aspects of constructivism.
